Guys,
This is a little article about the unarticulated series of Polish bootlegs from the 80's. It doesn't include the two poker-caped figures (Chewie and Stormie) and two Disney series figures (C3PO and R2D2).
Polish unarts may be divided into several categories, according to:A. SOURCE OF THE COPIES
- Kenner copies:
- Elektrospółdzielnia movable carded figures' copies (with Biker Scout / TIE Pilot limbs):
Note: we cannot definitely say if this two groups were made separately by different producers. Acoording to my informer, there were at least three cities where the figures were made (Warszawa, Wałbrzych, Poznań), but all of them gave mixed lots from the groups above. The question is, how was it done in time? Maybe at start there was one producer making only the Kenner copies. Then the Elektro series appeared. Then another producer made unart copies of Elektro. Then another producer made copies of the Kenner copies and copies of Elektro copies. Maybe. That could explain some of the categories below (B, E)
B. SIZE
- large
- small
Example (two bootlegs and the Kenner):
I have observed all of the unart figures differing in size. Part of them could be explained by the process of the rubber cooling after molding. Part of them though are so different in size, that could only be explained as the copy of the copy.
C. RUBBER SOFTENESS
- hard, almost plastic, unpossible to bend the limbs
- quite hard, but with limbs possible to move
- soft, body and limbs bendable
This category is linked only with the material used and cannot be ascribed to the particular producers.
D. RUBBER COLOR
- white: we know about Leia, Luke, Luke Pilot, Ben, Han, Vader (painted silver), Tusken, Nunb, Commando
- creme: Ben, Fett, Scout,
- yellow: Tusken, Luke, Han, Wicket, Veers, Nunb, Pruneface, Lando, Rebel Hoth, At-St,
- brown: Chewie, Logray, Chirpa, Wicket, Tusken, Ben, Leia, Luke, Veers, Commando, Barada, Fett, Luke Pilot, Scout, At-St, Lando, Rebel Hoth
- grey: Zuckuss, Vader, Leia, Ben, Luke, Han, Veers, Commando, Tusken, Wicket, Lando, Luke Pilot, Fett, At-St, Rebel Hoth, Scout, Nunb, Pruneface
- black:Leia, Veers, Vader, Chewie, Chirpa, Wicket, Commando, C3PO (painted silver/gold), Stormtrooper (painted silver/gold or only with white detals), IG88 (painted silver), Fett, At-St, Rebel Hoth, Luke Pilot, Lando, Scout, Gunner (painted silver/gold), Snowtrooper (painted silver/gold)
- red: Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, Zuckuss, C3PO (painted silver/gold), IG88 (painted silver), Commando, Barada, Lando, Gunner (painted silver/gold), Fett, At-St, Rebel Hoth, Luke Pilot, Scout, Nunb, Pruneface
- pink: Luke, Han, Leia, Chirpa, Fett, At-St
- blue: Luke, Han, Leia, Ben, IG88 (painted silver), Veers, Commando, Barada, Tusken, Lando, Luke Pilot, At-St, Rebel Hoth, Fett, Scout, Nunb, Pruneface
- green:Leia, Han, Ben, Barada, Commando, Tusken, Wicket, Fett, At-St, Rebel Hoth, Luke Pilot, Lando, Scout, Scout, Nunb, Pruneface
This category is linked only with the material used and cannot be ascribed to the particular producers.
Note:This is PINK Han, on both pictures - the trousers were always painted, the rubber color is shown on shirt!
And this is RED IG88! The so called 'silver' or 'gold' figures (IG88, C3PO, Gunner, Snowtrooper, Stormtrooper, Vader) were made of normal color rubber, then painted silver or gold.
E. WAY OF DETAIL PAINTINGS
- Careful, the details are thin, faces are drawn with something we could call 'taste'. Example:
- Cheesy, made in hurry. Example:
In my opinion, the differences in detail painting were determined by the different producers.
A bit of statistics:The most popular unarts today are Stormtroopers, Veers, Chewbacca and Vader. We can easily say each of them is known in about 120-150 examples. But there is only one undamaged silver Vader though...
One of most popular is Boba Fett, but thanks to the fact that this character is a very popular focus for collectors, unart Fetts still reach quite high prices.
The rarest of all seem to be the ewoks: about 25 of each exist.
The most unique variants existing are:
- pink Chirpa
- blue Chirpa
- yellow Tusken
- yellow Veers
- silver Vader
- red Zuckuss
- pink At-St Driver
There is still lot to do in the matter of Polish unarts. We do not know the makers. We don't know the reasons of chosing particular characters for copying. We don't know if ANY of the producers was making ALL of the 27 figures at once. We don't have any molds preserved. Hope we will find in the future some of the answers. For now, I can only show you the place, where - according to my informer - one of the producers had his workshop. It is in Warsaw, and the workshop doesn't exist anymore:

Please add your suggestions or suplements, I will edit this post according to them. Also will try to make better pictures
