I've been kicking myself all day for being the 2nd highest bidder on a very desirable item that went a good cut below market value on ol' eBay. Must happen to me once or twice a month. On the upside it's teaching me to be patient. On the downside, "DAMN THAT SMARTS!!!"

That is always tough, Pete.

Try to get some comfort by assuming that the maximum bid of the highest bidder was much higher than the final price. So the actually win the item you had to pay the market value or above.

You win some you loose some (it always sucks to be first looser!!) I still have a laugh ( & cry) when I win ( & loose) by a few cents.

Man, I hear ya. I've had this happen several times to me in the past couple of weeks. I need to finally sign up for an auction sniping program, because that's what always happens to me. I'll literally be watching the last few seconds tick down, I'll be waaaaayyyyy in the lead, then out of nowhere it gets sniped.

I used to be opposed to snipers. I always thought of it as "unfair," but now it seems to be the norm, and I'll just have to join the ranks.

I was like $200 up on a gold Vader prototype case a few days ago, and lost it in the last 10 seconds. I died a little inside.

Yeah. I've been there too. It sucks ass. And it doesn't matter if its big dollar items or small things. Losing just makes you go "Awww shit. That bastard, whoever they are I hope they choke on it."

Off topic I know, but technically there is nothing wrong with sniping IMO. A sniper just places his max bid at the very last moment. If he wins, he was apparently prepared to pay more for the item than the 2nd highest bidder.

I snipe frequently to overcome myself getting involved in bidding wars on items which I don't want to overpay. It is always a gamble as my max bid might be lower than that of the 2nd highest bidder, like in any normal auction, but here there is no time for a second try to raise bids.

i try too put in a couple % over my maximumbid just to dont feel sorry about been outbidded of a couple of dollars in the last seconds.
works of course only if i have some thoughts of a value

I also snipe, everybody do it and if you don't snipe I think you do not have a chance, unless you make a very high bid, the first time.

Sniper might help you and it might not Tad. The auction that prompted my current angst was one where I used a snipe. Problem was it was a low-ish snipe and I knew it. But as Marco so astutely points out even if you're using a sniper and even if you're aiming high you can still lose out to the guy that's sniping higher.

I lost this morning : ( I bid on a bad Mecc Fett and LOST!!!!! But I did some thinking today. Some other collector got him and will probably cherish him so I found some happiness in that..... Ya win some and ya lose some.....

I'm guessing that thanks to the under-performing auction title this one ended up around $100 below where it might have been otherwise. Agreed?

Pete I think it ended where it should, considering the condition. For $300 you could get a really nice MOC.

Personally I hate auctions to be ended before the official ending, especially when bids already had been placed.

It is unethical behaviour of both the seller and the 'back door' buyer who in this way effectively prevents fellow collectors from having an equal chance to win the collectable. That smells like egoism to me.

I have experienced this a few times the last couple of months, and it really pisses me off very time.

missed it by 6 pence

I recently missed out on a Castle(not star wars) that I've been trying to get for over a year. I had a week that I didn't check for it and it came and went for 140dollar. Was in great condition too. I was so mad at myself.
