Luke Skywalker - Bespin Fatigues - Variation Profile Empty
PostSubject: Luke Skywalker - Bespin Fatigues - Variation Profile   Luke Skywalker - Bespin Fatigues - Variation Profile I_icon_minitimeWed Apr 13, 2011 5:24 pm

As a kid, Bespin Luke was always one of my favourite figures, and it was a Bespin Luke which triggered off my later collecting, and since that day Bespin Luke has been a kind of pet project of mine. Initially, and in the opinion of almost all collectors books or guides, Bespin Luke is generally regarded as having just two variations. Blonde hair / Brown hair.
However, as my collection grew it slowly became apparent that the figure is literally riddled with variations and is unquestionable a variation hunters dream figure.
This is a general profile of Bespin Lukes most notable variations, some minor, some major. My collection is missing a couple that I no excist, mainly the Lili Ledy version and the European dark boots variant. Firstly here's my collection ( again for those who saw my last post )
Luke Skywalker - Bespin Fatigues - Variation Profile Bespin10
Luke Skywalker - Bespin Fatigues - Variation Profile Bespin11
Luke Skywalker - Bespin Fatigues - Variation Profile Bespin12

Lets start with Lukes head which is subject to countless variations itself. Firstly the Hair colour. I generally class there as been a defiante six different hair colours. In order in the picture below.
1. True Yellow, 2. Light Yellow, 3. Matte Ginger, 4. Glossy Ginger, 5. Mustard Brown, 6. Brown
Luke Skywalker - Bespin Fatigues - Variation Profile Hair_c10

( I appreciate that in these photo's some look very similar, in the flesh the differences are more noticeable )
The two ginger haired version and the brown haired version are in my opinion the ones that show up the least. Although the matte ginger haired version does show up with a certain degree of frequency, it is very difficult to find one with perfect hair as it is incredibly suseptable to paint wear. This one is pretty much perfect, but it's about the 8th one that's been in my collection, each one a little bit better than the last.

Next up is the actual sculpt of Lukes head, there is unquestionably 2 distinctive sculpts which are pictured below. Large and small.
Luke Skywalker - Bespin Fatigues - Variation Profile Head_s10

Now although the size difference is very noticeable in this picture, the scale is slightly off, and in reality the difference isn't this great. There are, as you may be able to tell from looking at all the figures at the top, potentially more than two different sculpts, however there are that many hair colours, skin tones and eye colour's, that focusing on the very subtle differences is very difficult, which is why I tend to stick to the defiante two.

Next up is a minor variation I've noticed mainly concerning the mustard brown hair version, which is that he can be found with either black or brown eyes.
Luke Skywalker - Bespin Fatigues - Variation Profile Eye_co10

Another minor head variation is the colour of the plastic in which the head is moulded out of. I haven't included a specific picture but just looking at the pictures at the top of the page show this quite well.

Next up is Lukes right arm, which has a minor sculpt variation, concerning the pocket at the top of his arm. One version is thin with a pointed bottom, the other is fat with a more flat bottom.
Luke Skywalker - Bespin Fatigues - Variation Profile Pocket10

Next up is another minor sculpt variation concerning a pocket, this one is the small pocket on Lukes belt located on the back of the figures torso section. The pocket can be found with either a small clasp shaped like a little key hole, or with no clasp.
Luke Skywalker - Bespin Fatigues - Variation Profile Torso_10

Next up is Lukes left leg, which is a major sculpt variation concerning the Lightsaber hilt hanging from his belt. This variation is most commonly referred to as the attached or detached saber. This is simply because, one has a small line conecting it to the belt which is painted black. The other however does not have this painted area, and appears to be just hanging there. A closer inspection also shows the 2 Saber hilts are noticably different in design also. One is thicker and the detailing is different.
Luke Skywalker - Bespin Fatigues - Variation Profile Leg_sc10

That brings us down to the feet, now the standard colour of Bespin Lukes boots is a kind of caramel tan brown. One of the most noted and valuable Bespin Luke variants is the dark boots version, which is often referred to as the PBP version, European version or Tri-Logo version. However the dark boots version has showed up on Palitoy cards also.
The pictures below are of three different colours, the dark boots version is missing as I haven't managed to come across a reasonably price immaculate one yet ( I'm quite quality picky ) Shown below are
1. Caramel Brown ( standard ), 2. Brown, 3. Dark Brown ( not as dark as the afore mentioned one )
Luke Skywalker - Bespin Fatigues - Variation Profile Boot_c10

The caramel brown boots are found on almost all Bespin Lukes, the Brown version seen in picture two here seems to be associated with the matte ginger haired figure, as everyone I've ever come across has been the same. The third, slightly darker brown, is present on two of my figures, both are on the bottom row of the first sewt of figure pictures, the first is the yellow haired version which is most likely a European figure of some kind ( it has stamps on both legs with the COO smothed over ). the last is from the figure on the end with the damage to the face. This figure is a raised bar no COO figure and the only time I've ever come across one with these colour boots, all the rest look like the figure stood in the middle of these two.

All this talk of country of origin brings us to the Country of origin stamps which can be found on Bespin Luke.
Luke Skywalker - Bespin Fatigues - Variation Profile Coo_sh10

The ones pictured here are :
1. Hong Kong ( large print ), 2. Hong Kong ( small print ), 3. Hong Kong ( 2 legs )
4. No COO ( 1 leg ), 5. No COO ( 2 legs ), 6. No COO ( raised bar )
Missing from here is the dark boots variation which I believe is the same as the number 5 on here, also the Lili Ledy version, which is a raised bar No COO, but the bar cross's over the crease in Luke pants, where as the normal raised bar ( shown here ) the crease goes through the bar.

Finally we have the weapons. Bespin Luke featured two weapons, a blaster and a lightsaber. the blaster was the Han Solo smuggler blaster and it is generally regarded that it is the light blue version that came with Bespin Luke. It should also be mentioned that the Mexican Lili Ledy version came with the blue Rebel blaster, because the Lili Ledy company did not produce the smuggler blaster.
I generally class there as been four different versions of the lightsaber. There is the standard and undoubtably most common version, where the three buttons are small and set in a rectangular depression, and then the version which is is pretty much the same mould, but lacks the rectangular depression, and the three buttons are larger. these two are shown below.
Luke Skywalker - Bespin Fatigues - Variation Profile Lights10

The other two versions, which unfortunately I currently don't have in my collection are the Lily Ledy version and what is generally regarded as been the PBP version. These have a much fatter hilt guard and once again lack the rectangular depression. also the three buttons don't touch each other. These two sabers look alike and look like they have been rather poorly moulded. The best way to identify the Lili Ledy version is that it's made of a much paler, almost translucent yellow plastic.

Well, I think that just about covers it. This inormation is the result of years of collecting and yet still something new occassionally pops ups. So, if anyone would like to add to this or correct any information I may have got wrong, then any fresh information would be greatly appreciated.
Likewise if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask, and I'll try my best to answer them.
Thanks for looking

Cheers Doctor!
I enjoyed writting it also, it's great to finally be able to talk about my hobbie to people who are interested, I think my wife will be pleased as well! She tries to look interested bless her, but you can sometimes see the life draining from her when I talk about a new figure I've got.

Actually, I think you already have both!

The yellow haired version is a PBP Luke Bespin and the raised bar no COO figure, in my opinion, is a Ledy.

To be fair, I would have to kind of agree, and I have often thought this. The middle figure at the bottom, looks in almost all ways like the Ledy Luke, and the guy to his right with the yellow hair is unquestionable a European version of some description. More than likely a PBP as you say.
The minor problem is I'm missing a ledy lightsaber and blaster, and I'm also missing a PBP Saber.
When I say I'm missing the European dark boots variant. There is one, almost always referred to a PBP version, but in actual fact tends to show up more often than not on Tri-Logo cards and occassionally on Palitoy cards, and it's got very dark boots and the exact same head as the first luke seen in the top row. Thats the bad boy that continues to elude me!
Cheers for the reply, and thanks for helping confirm something I had long wondered about. Very Happy

I was talking about these figures. The left is a dark boot PBP Luke Bespin and the one on the right looks like a Ledy to me. If you've seen darker colored boots than either of these two, I'd really want to see pics. I've never seen any darker.

I've seen a couple on Ebay, where the boots looked much darker, but it could have been bad photography, chances are I've been hunting a figure it turns out I all ready have. You've just made my day!
You seem to know your Bespin Lukes, any chance you can help me with another question. The two lightsaber variations pictured.
Luke Skywalker - Bespin Fatigues - Variation Profile Lights11

The one on the top is unquestionably the most common, the one below is often referred to as the Palitoy version, however, as an English resident the Palitoy version I had as a child was the top version, so did all my friends. Can you shed any light onto the origin of this lightsaber variant, if it was associated with any specific release. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

- A story about a Lightsaber -
When I first started collecting as an adult, I started my collection with two Bespin Luke's, both came with the bottom Saber, I can remember thinking, at the time, I'm sure the buttons where set into a rectangular depression, from what I could remember as a child. Turned out the guy I was buying off had palmed alot of repro weapons off in his shop. I'm glad in a sense because this was my first experience with repro's and I learned alot from it, in the form of identifying repro's. Naturally, at the time, in the infancy of my collecting knowledge, not recognizing the two Sabers from what I could remember as a child, I assumed they where repro's aswell and ultimately got rid! Gutted! I'll never forget the day I saw them on Rebel Scum as variations, I nearly cried!
It took more than five years to finally find another to put back in my collection!

I'm a loose figure collector, so I can't rely on what sabers came with each figure either. Still in the process of researching which sabers go with each figure variation. I was waiting until I had amassed a collection of sabers, which I have. Now I've got to sort them all out.

Wow! Nice work! Have you seen the COO guide created by wbobafett? He has one more COO variation that you have missed but probably already own. The Hong Kong ( small print ) has 2 variations.

Yes I have seen this guide, He actually has a raised bar variation that I'm missing as well. Not sure if I have the Small print Hong Kong, I have a few, and haven't checked the differences since posting this original post, I'll have to check.
It goes to show just how many COO variations there is out there, when I looked through the wbobafett post, which is unquestionably huge and clearly contains way more figures than my collection by I would imagine a long shot! I still found one in my collection not shown on his page, and I only checked the Star Wars part of my collection.

The Quest for Varations continues!
