Hi Guys Smile

Has anybody got any experience of getting Original SW One Sheets / Quads Framed professionally?

I went to our local professional framing shop today to discuss options regarding getting some Original Vintage SW One Sheet Movie Posters framed. The quote was around £50 - £70 depending on materials used etc.

Here are some things they do -

Dry Roll and Backing this I believe constitutes restoration and sounded very similar to line backing restoration apparently its flattens the poster out completely and makes it look mint however it can have an adverse effect on value as these types of processes are non reversible.

They do 2 main types of Glass standard (light reflects off it) and also diffused glass which provides a matt style finish and light doesn’t reflect off it.

Another point to consider was Original One Sheets have white borders so its sounds like a small mount is going to be necessary apparently the guy I was speaking can do mounts in different colours.

Finally the frame I know I’m going to go with eventually its quite thin (maybe an inch) and is Graphite in colour.

If anyone’s had any experience of framing original one sheets professionally and can post experiences on this thread or just share any knowledge that you may know that could help me out please feel free Smile

Cheers Jay

Got an original ESB one sheet framed a while back Jay.

I spoke at length with the framers who were very experienced and they told me that as long as it wasn't going to be in sunlight for a prolonged period then there really wouldn't be any point getting the UV protective glass (plus it would have cost a LOT more!)

I had the poster backed and then had a nice border applied to the edge and a great silver looking frame.

I think I bought the poster for about £70 (from Collectormania in Milton Keynes) from a dealer and I think the frame cost a few quid more than the poster!

Looks good though Cool

I would never have an authentic movie poster "professionally" framed. The dry mounting on foam core process is pretty much guaranteed to destroy any collectable resale value of a poster and it destroys the poster in the process. My experience is also that most employees of those shops do not know what they are talking about. These are lessons learned the hard way.

A friend of mine had an original "Revenge of the Jedi" poster and took it to a framer. They cut the poster down to 27 x 39 in order to get it to fit their stock foam core size and frames. MORONS. They destroyed that poster. Just thinking about it makes me sick. He also bought me a poster for a birthday present at the same time that he had dry mounted and they ruined that one too. It was a folded Star Trek: The Motion Picture one-sheet. While dry mounting it they just made the folds look worse and wrinkled the poster next to one fold and they cut off the bottom of the poster where the distribution proof and serial number was!! On top of all that between the time that he picked up the poster and gave it to me the foam core warped so badly it wouldn't even fit in a frame!

Now if you are talking about the archival process of having a poster preserved on linen that's a different situation and one that adds value and ensures the preservation of the poster.

For original one-sheets buy a frame, yes they can be expensive--to frame up my vintage soundtrack poster cost more than the poster--but unless there is matting involved there isn't anything in the process that requires any special professional skills. If you want to take it have have it matted I would entreat you DO NOT HAVE IT DRY MOUNTED. But if you're serious about it and want to do it right then unfortunately those are the costs involved.

In my opinion an authentic one-sheet is a pop-cultural artifact that needs to be kept as far away from a frame shop as possible.
