Subject: PayPal and private information... Mon May 21, 2012 10:51 pm
Has anybody else gone through this yet? I bought my airplane tickets for Celebration VI yesterday using my PayPal account. Today, I logged onto PayPal to review everything and my accounts on freeze and they "PayPal" is now requesting SSN, photo ID or passport and proof of address. Has anybody run into this "SHIT" yet?

Is it your actual account that is frozen or did you get an email saying that it is frozen? The reason I ask is that I've had two seemingly genuine requests for personnal information from PayPal to 'unfreeze' my account & when I reported it to them they confirmed that they were phishing emails. It would be worth contactiong them anyway, just to make sure your account hasn't been hacked as the requested information clearly has a value to criminals. If it is legit, it may be worth posting something to warn other members.

I called them and was told that this is being done to better protect their customers. They wanna know who's using Paypal. I was told to upload "not email" a copy of my drivers license, a copy of my social security card and a bill or statement with my name and address. I never received an email from them. It just seems odd...

Well at least you have established that the request for the information is genuine. Ironically I've had a phone call from PayPal today asking me to confirm whether I authorised a recent payment (which happened to be for more than I usually make). I don't know whether there have been problems with their accounts lately, but as you say, they are tightening up security.
