Sorry if this has been posted here before, but I stumbled onto this forum post which included a helpful little tutorial that might be useful to anyone looking to construct their own diorama.
See those little explosions on the Hoth diorama?
The chap who constructed the scene explains how to pull off the effect - from something that seems pretty simple to make, I can't get over how amazing the effect:

Now THAT'S what I call a diorama! As you say, the explosions are simply constructed, but they're incredibly effective. Thanks for sharing!
