Is finding a variant blinding people from the obvious?

After seeing variant talk going on for the past few years again, i figured its time for this type of thread to pop up. .

But my Boba Fett has dark blue arms and light colored toro. Sure it sat in the sun for a year but that's not relevant. Very Happy

Don't know what you mean by that, I thought variant discussions have improved a lot here on TIG lately. I don't see the need for a new thread.

To prevent loosing time on socalled variants, we can now just refer to this thread and done:

http://www.imperialgunneryforum.com/t3379-everything-you-always-wanted-to-know-about-discolored-figures-but-were-afraid-to-ask

And to discuss real variants, we make separate threads to find them back easier using the search funtion instead of having them pilled up in one thread.

Or in case of Ledy and PBP/POCH figures discuss them in their respective threads.

No need to change things when they work. Very Happy

Everyone is welcomed to contribute as well as to give their opinions.

These things just happen in forums.

Dont let it spoil your enthusiasm, Chris.

I thought this was an awesome idea for a thread, not everything is discolored, a Ledy, PBP or a Poch. I've found quite a few new COO variants not found in a guide, & they aren't discolored, poch or Ledy. Where should they go for discussion? I was thinking here? I personally wouldn't start a new thread to show a figure with a slightly different COO, but again that is just me. What's the precedent for this stuff?

Just add it to one of the other threads. This one can be deleted now since the fun was killed by the 4th post anyway. Matter of fact, this was actually for a way other items could be discussed without ruining the other threads, but its cool. Flood em.

I thought it was okay. I even made a little funny... Very Happy

There are always bumps we can do to old threads, but this is just fine.

Anyway, I need help. Is this Nick Cage a variant?

John, i thought it was fine too. I've talked about doing a thread like this before but never got around to doing it. But as i told you in the pm, i don't care any more. I tried to come here to do something away from the things im dealing with around me and get the same shit i did when i left 5-6 months ago. Makes me wonder if its all even worth it any more. At least i did my own research on what i was collecting instead of getting it off someone else's website.

Using someone else's website for information is researching. Sharing that information is permitted providing the author of the original content has authorized use and the information is cited. Whether you use your own collection or someone else's information (Wolff's information comes to mind as example), it's research nonetheless.

Not sure if your accusing someone of plagiarism?

I will say this , I wonder where the fascination lies?

Do you want to be the person to "discover" a new variant? Is it for cashing in , or just to say you found it?

Anyone actively hope to discover a variant for any reason?

John, this was actually for a factory error type thread. Hence what i originally had posted to begin with. Nothing more. But we see how it turned out in the end, just as usual.

Chris it's back on topic (or I'm trying)

I was just saying that there seems to be an obsession for some where they don't even listen to common sense and reason when it comes to these things.

I wonder if they're like hunters trying to find something rare and unique for their own collection or if they're just hoping to discover something to have a quick sale and make crazy numbers by pimping it out to the highest bidder.

Your thinking like i did when the craze hit a few years ago here. Some are cool, but most often its for the cash cow a so called new variant will bring. What i was trying to do back then was help educate those not so familiar with what is or isn't one but more often got told i didn't know what the hell i was talking about. That's why i thought a separate thread from the discoloured one would be a good idea. Let it roll and find out.

It's cognitive dissonance. They don't want to hear they're wrong, they just want a person or too to agree so they can go public with the "new discovery"

I think you're right on though, it's cash cow 90% of the time.

My main issue with "Variant Guys" has always been they're hell bent on their newest "discovery" being something legit. I mean is it really that hard to figure out when plastic is discolored or a "paint app" is really overspray or some other error. I get that it's fun to search for different figures to extend your fun and knowlage. But some reality needs to be injected into some guys lives.

Your answer was actually a good one. No need in deleting your account. We had a guy here one time who asked our opinions about a figure and when he got his answer, he went all ape shit crazy on everybody. You couldn't tell him anything cause he knew it all already. But there are those like him who try to pass off anything as a variant when its not. Take the marble limb fetts out there. All those are are the plastic breaking down to look like that. Those were hot items 5 years ago. I know, i bought a couple of them. Not everything is negative we say around here. Most people actually say thanks for the info, not get mad cause someones opinion is different than theirs and wants their account deleted. Doesn't help your case doing that if your so sure everything you have is a variant.

I missed your answer. And now I can't read it because you got all spleeny. As to being "all negative". We're giving our opinions as we see it in relation to our experiences here. You give your view I give mine. Deal with it.

Regardless of its original intensions, I'm rather concerned about how this thread is panning out.

I appreciate that it is very frustrating when every few weeks someone claims to have made a ‘new’ discovery, or argues the toss with more knowledgeable collectors that a green limbed Chewie was intentionally made that way by the factory.
The guy I believe Chis is refering to was very arogant & rude to those that tried to help him. Fortunately his type are in the minority.
But the initial attitudes expressed here (some since removed or edited) may prevent genuine discoveries coming to light in this forum, due to newer members being reluctant to post. In the relatively short time I’ve been here, we’ve had some new members indicate that they were nervous about making their first post. How much legitimate information have we lost out on?

I know there is only a limited amount left to ‘discover’ in this hobby, but it is still out there waiting. Wouldn’t it benefit the site if they are shown here first?

I don't want to see members leaving or refraining from posting over this!

On a positive note I recently started a thread about a ‘new’ version of the Rebel Commando rifle which is not currently on the guide. So far I'm pleased to say that I have received constructive input & gratitude.
