GLASSLITE GUIDE & DISCUSSION THREAD

GLASSLITE GUIDE & DISCUSSION THREAD ORLytJc
Artwork by Walkie

Introduction

Glasslite (pronounced Glass-Leet) was the Brazilian company that acquired the licensing rights to manufacture and distribute Star Wars figures and vehicles in Brazil from 1988.

However, before we discuss Glasslite, let's rewind a little....

During the early 1980s as the Star Wars craze was spreading across the world, Kenner and its licenses had started to establish what would become a very successful product range of Star Wars toys in North America and Europe.

Brazil was one of a number of countries where no company had acquired the Star Wars license, resulting in no licensed products being available in stores. To satisfy the needs of Brazilian parents and children, Model Trem (a company previously known for making model train parts) began to produce a line of bootleg Star Wars figures for the home market under the title of "Aventura na Galáxia".

Model Trem managed to produce over thirty different figures - mainly made of lead - and released these in generic boxes with a simple label on the front to identify the contents.

According to Brazilian sources, the Glasslite company secured the Brazilian license from Lucasfilm in 1987. Shortly after this, Glasslite threatened Model Trem with legal action and Model Trem was forced to cease production of their line of bootleg Star Wars figures. Model Trem, not wishing to lose out of any sales revenue, reacted by producing a new range of bootlegs called “Nova Aventuras nas Galaxias”. This new range utilised several common parts from the previous bootleg Star Wars range with Model Trem cleverly altering them just enough to avoid any further legal action.

Meanwhile, Glasslite, who already had several successful product lines as part of their "TV TOYS" range such as The A-Team, Masters of the Universe and Thundercats, was able to officially add Star Wars to their range. In 1988 Glasslite simultaneously released their latest two product lines, "STAR WARS - O PODER DA FORÇA" and "STAR WARS DROIDS".

Information on the STAR WARS DROIDS product line from Glasslite can be found in a separate guide here.

"STAR WARS - O PODER DA FORÇA" or "POWER OF THE FORCE" consisted of eight figures and three vehicles, although the rear of the cards did show a ninth figure along with two alternatives to those released. Kenner was known to have had extensive contact with Glasslite during the development stage and sent them both reference material and production toys, which would account for the non-Glasslite produced figures and vehicles appearing on the reverse of the cards and in sales catalogues.

Like other foreign licensees, Glasslite variants can be identified due to their unique materials, packaging and paint applications. This guide aims to document these differences and allow variant collectors a single point reference guide to aid their collecting.

List of Released Figures

List of Released Vehicles

Cardback Designs

Glasslite use the same generic card artwork for all their figures, this method was echoed with their Droids product line. The name plate label above the figure bubble was added during the final stages of production - judging from the random placement of these labels this process appears to have been manual rather then automated. The full range of card backs can be viewed here.
GLASSLITE GUIDE & DISCUSSION THREAD DBSyfRz

The name plates contained three pieces of information: the Character Name, Description and a Unique Reference Number. While most people have noticed the name plate stickers which came in a multitude of bright colours, how many people noticed that the unique reference number sequence is incomplete? If you examine the translated list of name plates below, for some reason Glasslite did not release an action figure using the number 5167.15.

Retail Catalogue

Published by Glasslite, this 1988 retail catalogue shows their up and coming STAR WARS - O PODER DA FORÇA range along with several other TV and Film toys including the Bionic Six, Rambo & Karate Kid. Note the promotional images used at this stage still featured Kenner produced items.

NOTES:
The Glasslite C-3PO belongs to COO family #I, this family contains three main COO marking variations.

By checking the parent COO with the "HONG KONG" stamp it's clear to determine where the production for the earliest version of this figure took place. During the products life and possibly as part of a cost reduction exercise production was moved to another country. There the country of origin "HONG KONG" was machined out of the mold tooling, this modification produces a "RAISED BAR" effect in the molded figure.

The last modification took place for the Kenner Droids line changing the date from 1982 to "1985". This version of the mold tooling was later shipped to Brazil and used by Glasslite, therefore the "1985" COO is common to both the Kenner Droids & Glasslite product lines.

The closest COO relative with a "1982" stamp is used for the comparison below.

DIFFERENCES:
Compared to his Kenner counterpart, the Glasslite C-3PO has:

- Matt gold painted finish
- Moulded in harder plastic
- Larger flash remains underneath the torso
- (C) L.F.L.1985 coo stamp instead of (C) L.F.L.1982*
- No accessories

(*) Note the Kenner Droids action figure also shares the (C) L.F.L.1985 coo

ACCESSORIES:
The Glasslite C-3PO does not come with any accessories unlike the Kenner counterpart.

welcome to The Imperial Gunnery's Glasslite Guide.

Although there are currently no figure entries in the guide, rest assure we have the figures in the secret TIG underground lair currently been studied study

In the meantime, we're missing several MOC photos so if you can help please send me a PM myself or simply say help below, and as always this is a public discussion so please feel free to join in.

Chewbacca COO and Eyes?

GLASSLITE GUIDE & DISCUSSION THREAD BbioKjK

NOTE:
As part of this comparison guide I'll also aim to show any subtle COO differences for each figure. For those that don't know, when the steel moulds were produced (normally as a pair) the COO was punched into the mould tool by hand which is why we see differences.

At the end of the day it's down to your personnel collecting interests, some collectors decide to collect these, some don't.

The above COO is known as COO#12 in the original guide, but for now i'll simply call them A and B.

EYES

GLASSLITE GUIDE & DISCUSSION THREAD ND5ZjKV
Glasslite COO#B - Cross Eyed / Glasslite COO#A - Cross Eyed

GLASSLITE GUIDE & DISCUSSION THREAD KSIEqmj
Glasslite COO#A - Pin Hole / Kenner COO#B - Big Eyes

NOTE:
- It would appear that Glasslite used two different spray masks for Chewbacca's pupils (cross-eyed and pin hole). In my personnel Glasslite collection I have owned four cross-eyed and one pin hole.

QUESTIONS?:
- Which eye variant is more common?
- Does the Kenner figure have more then one eye variant for this COO?
- Go dig out those figures!

Luke Skywalker Farmboy COO

GLASSLITE GUIDE & DISCUSSION THREAD TNNml0U

NOTE:
Shown above is the COO associated with both Glasslite & Meccano produced figures. Once again the subtle differences are down to the stamping procedure during the final stages of producing the moulds.

Awesome Glasslite thread. I may have something to contribute. I have 2 Princess Leias and one of them has a paint variation. I am not sure if it is an error or not, but she is missing the two white circles on her belt. Have you noticed this on your Glasslite figures?

It seems I am unable to post images. There are definitely differences between my two Glasslite Leias though. One has a melt mark in the crotch area. The other (unpainted belt) has a small melt mark on her back.

Thanks for the photos Sean, regarding the missing paint op's on Leia's belt I would assume looking at the quality of the paint this was done my hand. So imo you have a pretty cool factory error.

Below is a photo of two of my Luke's, again poor quality and inconsistent paint op's on the belt.

Luke Farmboy: Belt Paint Ops

Regarding the melt marks on your Leia figure, melt marks are again quiet common for Glasslite figures. The photo below shows one of my Luke Farmboy's with melt marks on his chest. However at home I have a second Luke with the similar melts on his chest and a Snowtrooper and Chewbacca with melt marks on their bums.

Thanks for sharing, and fingers crossed we sort your photo posting problem out.
