Hi,

I recently picked up some figures from an estate dealer whom got them out of a client's attic. I have a few that I am concerned about variation-wise; namely Obi Wan, Bespin Luke, Darth Vader, Squid Head, and Ig-88.

The first question I have is about the Obi Wan, there is a notch in the arm sleeve where the saber goes that I do not have on any of my other figures along with the hole for the saber being incredibly small at the tip of the hand. It looks like there is extra plastic inside the hole causing the tightness. I'm not sure if it's possibly an overseas variant as the lot did include a Yak Face figure (pretty much the main reason I purchased it! ).

The second question is the Bespin Luke has what appears to be olive green/yellow hair and I was wondering could this be a palitoy variant?

My third question is about Ig-88 and I just want to confirm that the yellow on his eyes is discoloration and not an actually factory paint op as it is on all spots on his head are yellow like this.

The fourth question is about Squidhead which to me looks like a Lili Ledy variant, but I'm not sure.

My final question is about a Darth Vader I got in the same lot that has a scratched out mostly COO but the chest buttons are very crisp. Is this a specific variant or just another COO variation of the US release?

Lili ledy squidhead has a unique coo, I don't have a pic handy but you could probably google it and find one.  Should be on the left leg reading from the top to the foot LFL83 I think, but that is from memory so best to google it.

The Ben I think is going to just be flashing.  Sometimes the molds had imperfections or something caused it not to seal all the way or the plastics were still hot when they opened, and flashing is fairly common.

The Luke bespin is possible that it was on palitoy cards or baggies, but palitoy was just a distributor who packed figures they did not produce them so it wouldn't be palitoy only.  Likely if it is found on palitoy cards it could be found also on tri logo or other cards as well.  There is some Luke bespin focus stuff out and you would have to look through it to see which release he is.

The ig88 is most likely a degradation in the paint.  I have never seen yellow.  I have seen anything from orange to light orange to red but never yellow.  It would make sense that all of the paint would fade evenly since it is from the same batch.

Vader is one of those figures that has so many coo markings and such detail it is always hard for me to see. Best to look up Oscar (m4k3r1) I think is his user name. He has a limelight and Vader focus on here. He would be best person to answer that one.

On the subject of IG-88 I'm not so sure it's paint degredation ... have a look at the two I have, including one with yellow spots.

Two reasons I don't think its paint degredation:
1) the yellow spotted one has red paint on it too (it's forehead), and the red hasn't faded, and
2) they are both very clean, one is more metallic silver (yellow) and the other is very slightly more bronze metallic (and this I know was kept well over the years) which suggests no sunlight damage to cause the degredation



I was about to post the same question since I only just got the yellow spotted one, so I'd be interested in any others opinions/answers/suggestions...

yep we did as I was searching for this guys for months , multiple times a day like a nut job . its just an error , cool one though

mat8yr, degradation can occur without sunlight, it is often just a reaction to atmospheric gas/air. The slight difference in plastic colour could just be down to a different batch. The forehead red dot is unusual.

It looks like degradation to me. The red on the forehead is not factory mask so if it was from the factory, it came from a rub or something else, if it isn't from the factory (more likely this) it is from a rub on another toy or nail polish or paint from a kid or etc....options into forever of how it got there.

Sunlight is not the only cause of breakdown. I read recently about a time capsule in Oklahoma that had a car buried in it. No sunlight just exposure to air and temperature and it was a rusted pile of nothing nearly when they opened the capsule up. As far as the silver color of the plastic, well they aren't even the same mold so not even from the same factory. Note the eyes, one is hollow eyes, the other is the double hollow eyes.

@mat8yr and others in this blog. In looking for a pale orange ig-88 poch variant on eBay I found this unusual ig-88 with yellow eyes. Interestingly it is the same sculpt (mould/coo) than the one @mat8yr showed us and that of Reynold1 as well. Could it be this is indeed a new variant? I do find very interesting all of the examples found got the exact same built (wire instead of gap in right leg, semi hollow eyes, coo alignment, body tones, etc). Can someone bring a yellow eyes ig-88 that has a different built? Three instances is not enough to conclude anything but would like to see more like these and hopefully different sculpts/coo family. Any carded examples? Here the pictures of this third yellow eyes ig-88 figure!
