So today I was strolling ebay for the next big find, I came across a weapons lot. In the weapons lot were some that I needed so I clicked on it. Frankly I was shocked. In the description it said they passed the float and light test, then it said they where custom reproductions. If the repros are now going to pass the test we usually use what else can we do to prevent buying these knock offs?

They may pass some tests but there are multiple ones that are used. Float, light, drop, general look, mold definition (like is it an existing mold known to exist), etc.

Reproduction items are getting better every year and it is scary how good some are but even the best reproduction weapons don't pass all the test that experienced collectors have. The issue is inexperienced collectors can get fooled so we encourage the asking of questions with very nice detailed pictures. AJ is probably one of the best weapon authenticators I have ever seen on any site at all.

I believe I have seen the listing. He advertises as reproductions that do pass the float and light test. He shows images of the blasters both floating and in front of a flashlight. He also sells Jedi Luke reproduction sabers with the description that they do float. I am an experienced collector, but not an expert. I have to say the Leia and Han blasters being sold would fool me. The imperial blaster being sold would not, it being more easily to distinguish as fake. I believe the reproductions in question are pictured on the main TIG website. Unfortunately if some buy these and sell them with a figure, and you're buying on photographs alone, it may be a roll of the dice. Although some pictures are clear on Ebay, a lot are not. Some can easily pass these reproductions as real with photos that are not clear and close up featuring the blasters. A lot of ebay pictures focus on the condition of the figure with less emphasis, or clear pictures focusing on the blaster or accessory. I believe it to be a bit disheartening. As to the seller; he is honestly advertising these as essentially fakes, but should he use more discretion, and in the interest of the hobby to not sell them? Or is the responsibility lay solely on the buyer of these fakes and trust that they do not resell the reproductions and misrepresent them as original?

Ditto - Aussie should wear a T-shirt saying "if it's not in my archive then... "

I dislike how these sellers are using different terms now. Custom or replacement, seemingly hoping to avoid what has become a bit of a dirty word: reproduction.

Yes I’ve noticed a profound increase in the use of the term “custom” of late
