PostSubject: sandperson tusken vinyl cape   sandperson tusken vinyl cape I_icon_minitimeSat Oct 07, 2017 3:01 am

Guys i am new to collecting and have a question that has probably been asked before. However searching the threads i didnt find the answer. the guestion is:

i have a tusken cape that does not make a zipping sound. TIG notes

"This cape will make a 'zipping' sound on the textured side if you run the edge of your fingernail across the surface. "

however, it then goes on to say the hong kong cape has a smooth texture on both sides. therefore does the initial statement not apply.

i.e i have a figure from a reputable source GMFGI 77 hong kong. both sides are smooth and it does not make a zipping sound. the cape looks and feels totally authentic, but im confused due to the wording on TIG.

thanks M

just adding to this post.

so i am looking at another of my figures (fig2). exact same, sandperson GMFGI 77 Hong kong. this cape does have the zipping noise.

however, i would say that both (fig1) & (fig2) capes have the exact same colour and thickness/pliability.

so im more confused now. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi M

Did you see that post : http://www.imperialgunnery.com/vinylcapesskirts.htm

i am not an expert but that link helps a lot

You should inspect the cape with magnifying glass concerning the texture.

I am sure some people will come here and give more help

Based on the information we had at the time it appears there are two styles of cape: one with a side that makes a zipping sound and a side that's smooth; and another with both sides that are a smooth texture with no zipping sound.

Centurio gives good advice in examining your capes with a magnifying glass to look for any texture patterns.

The two capes I have are both 'zippers' though the one has a more easily seen textured side than the other.

Another good sign, but not 100%, of an authentic cape is stress/creasing/rips/aging marks especially around the arm holes. The Tusken Raider cape is also prone to discolouration which is another good identifier.

Thanks Artoo.

but just to be clear.

what am i expected to see in examining the smooth/smooth non zipping cape under a magnifying glass?

I wouldn't expect to see any texture since so i am not sure how that would actually help in discerning its authenticity.

do these smooth/smooth/non zip capes only come on figures from a certain COO?

If so and say for example all smooth/smooth/non zip capes originated from taiwan then i could reasonably believe that if a smooth/smooth/non zip cape on a Hong Kong figure is is either a fake, or may have been mix'n'matched and therefore breaking the any real provenance anyway. Without any other testable criteria one would reasonably make the assumption that they're fake too.

Surely there has to be a more conclusive way to test the authenticity of smooth/smooth/non zipping capes than just a subjective look and feel?

I don't know if the capes are specific to any certain COO. The example on TIG is perhaps misleading, the cape pictured did indeed come on a HK figure, but of course there is every chance of figures and capes being switched over time by collectors.

If you look at the known fakes we have documented, they all have a 'dappled' or 'raised dimples' pattern for want of better terms. Based on these repros we know of so far, I'd say that if you have a cape completely smooth on both sides then it's a good chance it's original, as we haven't been alerted to any repro smooth/smooth/no zipping capes yet. That said, online you can buy pre-cut patterns from originals that you use on your own custom material. So what's to say yours isn't one of these? It's likely we could come across all sorts of different materials in the future.

Thanks Artoo.

Very helpful. A grader acquaintance of a friend noted this:

"If you look at it under a Magnifying Glass or Zoom in with a good camera, should be able to see a Slight ridged pattern. Not enough to make a sound with a fingernail or similar though...."

Unfortunately i returned the item before i could check this but certainly to the naked eye or touch there was no texture at all.

hopefully this info will help someone in the future.
