That sounds like a good long-term achievable goal, and hats off you realise it will take years - this will give you plenty of pleasure hunting stuff down and watching the collection grow
You also have plenty of foreign to Kenner licenses to choose from to keep the collection varied if you wish.
For display ideas a look through the limelight sections here will show some cool collections. Capetown and DarthStanley both specialised in vehicles/playsets but maybe not so much loose figures. Jawa57 also has a lot of boxed stuff. Bryan mentioned some supercollectors above who mostly have just about a bit of everything.
