Hi lads,

im thinking ( but by no means any where near ) buying an afa graded moc, ive been looking at a lot and have seen a few with a slight to considerable yellow tinting in the bubble, just wondered is the afa case airtight so stopping the yellowing from getting any worse, or are they all doomed to going yellow over time.

Or do you think i would be better off buying a loose one and putting it in a star/oscar case myself, i know i will be able to get one that would be out of my budget afa'd

looking to maybe spend around £100 as an xmas prezzie to myself, know that will restrict what im going to get but thats all im willing to part with. I may put a wanted post up in couple of weeks.

If you are looking to spend 100 on an afa graded figure with yellow bubble then
the chances are that that you can get the same figure ungraded with clear
bubble for less. If it is a ROTJ/POTF fig then the bubbles on those tend to yellow
more quickly regardless of what you do. I would personally buy ungraded moc
every time Wink

All bubbles will yellow in the end. Once the process is initiated (for instance by UV light) a lack of oxygen might slow down the process. I don't know how air tight AFA cases are, in other words do they prevent oxygen in the outside air from entering? Otherwise you might consider storing your AFA cases in a container filled with Helium/Argon, gasses which do not react with the plastic in your bubbles. Very Happy

Just face it Andy "All beauty is fleeting..”

to AFA or not to AFA

What is the benefit of collecting AFA? You pay a premium for cards which you could get much cheaper otherwise. On the other hand you obtain some kind of a quality assurance issued by AFA. That might be helpful once you decide to sell off your MOCs somewhere in future. Actually I am still doubting myself.

Hey guys, AFA cases are not airtight as they have a 'breathing' slit in the rear of them to stop condensation I guess. I have a POTF AFA85 Scout NM+ and is not a 'Y' grade BUT has slightly yellowed since grading thus giving you the answer. Wink

Anybody has an idea how much cheaper an "Y" grade AFA MOC is compared to the same AFA MOC with a clear bubble?
20-30%?

Ham,

cheers for clearing that up mate, thats one of the reasons i was looking toward afa for a more expensive purchase, as it dont stop the yellowing i think a standard star/oscar case will suffice, as i intend to buy from a reputable source i dont thnik ( hope ) a fake will be an issue,

Not sure as a peercentage but the y afa are cheaper than the clear ones, the same as loose

Andy, if i was you mate for £100 i would buy something off Toy toni, he has extremely mint geman 45 backs for about £85,
then use the rest to buy an acrylic case.
He also have a few nice rotj mocs, snowie,c3po,han hoth, lobot all in the £50 range.

You could get an AFA 80 graded figure for around £100-150, but a lot have tinted bubbles, and imo once they start to go there is no stopping them.
At least if you buy clear they should take a lot longer to yellow, if at all.

Only recently i bought a AFA 80 ESB greedo with clear bubble for £110 from the classifieds, it had 85 subs and is very very nice.

I don't think they're as cheap as 20-30%, maybe 10-15% IMO.

Del

Del said it for me!

There were 2 plastics used one that yellows and one that (to date) doesnt it varies as to which one was used across the lines heres some good reading on it.

http://www.imperialgunneryforum.com/vintage-chat-f1/palitoy-v-kenner-t1214.htm

Oh and many MOC's AFA graded with clear bubbles ended up turning yellow if anything the fact the MOC cant come out the case probably doesnt help imo although Hams right about the breathing space at the back of the AFA case but thats more to ensure moisture doesnt build up.

Cheers Jay

Im still stewing over this, ive decided NOT to go for an afa grading after all, they are good for loose to confirm that a figure is all original and has not been messed with but you do pay a premium.
Looking at a stormtropper which is mint with no yellowing at all, its a roty one or maybe an esb but not sure yet as they are a little bit more.

being a tight bastard i just ( not yet anyway ) cant bring myself to shell out as much for 1 moc, ive updated my want list in the classifieds instead. There are some really nice mocs out there that i would love in my collection but when i can get several for the same price thats whats gonna happen, Thanks for every one who chimed esp Del Very Happy

Good call Andy Smile Im looking forward to seeing your MOC collection grow Smile If you ever want any advice regarding MOC collecting prices etc shot me a PM and i will be happy to help / support.

On a side note if you like the displayability of the AFA Acrylic cases (and that was a factor when considering going the AFA route) then a little birdy has told me that super high quality Acrylic Cases will be going on sale (in the UK) via the TIG Forum very soon Wink

Or UKG them mate if they are nice.

Acrylic cases are about £10 plus postage, UKG charge £21 to grade a moc.

Your not going to get loads back for them when/if you sell but definately more than the £11 difference.

I think thats what im going to do.

that's maybe the worst I've seen. I just tried to find the pics of the ROTJ Fett that Dalto/Dallas had, remember that? That was pretty bad too. Can't find the pic tho.

Hey all I noticed you guys were mentioning buying from toy Toni, be advised there are allegations against him for fraudulent MOC figures. You can all read the info about it in the links below, personally I would avoid him like the plague.

Nice to meet you, arohk. Thanks for the welcome and thanks for putting up that link. What a shame that character didn't put all that energy that he used on those figures into something else. Second job maybe? First?
