I didn't think they'd make it in this year (seems kind of fitting now, just after the announcement of the Disney big news!!)...
... so along with 'dominoes' Star Wars action figures finally get inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame !!

I was a bit worried about the 'erector set' at first,
but really it's just an innocent construction set aimed at industrious children who liked to build impressive steel bridges across the living room while Dad smoked his pipe and Mum got the tea on!

Inducted toys are selected on the basis of the following criteria:
Icon-status: The toy is widely recognized, respected, and remembered
Longevity: The toy is more than a passing fad and has enjoyed popularity over multiple generations
Discovery: The toy fosters learning, creativity, or discovery through play or at later stage, variant research.
Innovation: The toy profoundly changed play or toy design. A toy may be inducted on the basis of this criterion without necessarily having met all of the first three.
Well deserved for Star Wars action figures, I would say.
LOL about the Erector and wooden stick.

I know there are a lot of 'classic' toys out there, but I'm amazed it's taken 14 years for our favourite toy line to be inducted!

Seriously that's insane it wasn't in there. I mean SW toys are the very definition of iconic!

agree, I can remember over the past 2 years calls for votes to go Star Wars, glad it's finally made it.
So for next year I think I would vote Playmobil. Playmo's been around a long time and has faithfully resisited the call of big draws like SW, Marvel/DC and Harry Potter.
What other toys do you think are worthy voting for?

Good call on the Playmobil.
I'd also nominate Scalextric, Airfix kits & Mamod steam engines.

I will vote for Playmobil as well. I especialy like the space themed Playmobile from the 80s. My cousin had the big Playmobil spacestation (see vid) at that time and we used it as the Millennium Falcon when I came to visit him with my Star Wars figures.
So to me Playmobil and Star Wars were very good to combine when playing. I also remember the little Playmobil bootleg R2 now.
Which makes me wonder....how it would have been when Playmobil had been granted a license to produce Star Wars figures instead of Kenner....

Great pics Marco, some of those Playmo SW customs are really good. I wonder how long Playmobil will hold out before making licensed sets
edit: two ads from my collection for the 80s Playmo Space range, the French one shows the R2D2 knockoff...

love the playmobil chat in here too! playmobil was a big part of my youth, for sure, along with lego and vintage sw obviously. that big ufo ship is gathering dust at my parents' place still.. still played with when the grandchildren come over.. always a pleasure to see (although the ten year old claims that those old toys are pretty lame compared to his newer battery-operated-glow-in-the-dark-abnoxiously-loud-and-aimed-at-destruction toys.. weird huh)

(Finally that little Easter egg has been discovered )
LOL about the comparison between vintage and modern toys.

Good to see more Playmobil love here
I was thinking of some other toys that might get votes, how about MOTU? That's been around since the 80s, had TV shows, books, film etc. It also has its modern line plus the vintage collection interest (with its own fair share of variants too )
Then there is the game Operation (In France called 'Docteur Maboul')
Another 80s game that is still made today, with Toy Story, Simpsons and even Star Wars versions!
Did anyone else have this game in their country? What was it called?
And there is also the late 60s/70s Space Hopper.... (was this available around the world too? Or just UK?)
edit: was called the 'Hoppity Hop' in the States

That is a great point. We are still discovering legitimate variations even today, so the dedicated interest in the vintage line is something I'm sure factored into their choice. (I agree with DB .. it's really hard to argue a more iconic, watershed line in toy history other than SW.) Looking at the list, SW pretty much knocks it out of the park on every single criteria. It's a proud day in SW land ...enshrined next to stick, box, and who knows ... maybe "LOG" one day LOL
