| Been seeing more and more auctions in which "vintage Star Wars" and "POTF2" keep appearing together and I'm staring at piles of 1995-2000-era crap. It infuriates me, mainly because those are not vintage, but additionally because it makes my searches all the more muddy.
Thoughts? |

| I'm sure there was a thread about this, either here or on one of the other forums where people were discussing the classification of original & modern figures. Describing POTF2 as vintage annoys me too, but then you have to remember that when they were realeased, some of the figures from the original line were only 10 years old when they were being described as vintage. The earliest POTF2 figures are now 17 years old. So for people that grew up with them they will be vintage in their eyes (especially when compared to what is being released now). I guess it's a generation thing! But, as you say, it can be very frustrating when searching ebay for 'real' vintage pieces when a number of the items turn out to be 'modern'. |

| It gets my back up a little, but it's because I feel the seller is using it as a bait tactic. I think people know better so I guess I look at those ads and think people are trying to pull a fast one. |

| It is annoying for those looking things up on ebay. I guess Ebay should start a new category regarding vintage and classify them properly like vintage and neo vintage or something like that.
To me anything above 1990 is not vintage. It has not matured enough and probably are common items that can be somewhat easily found.
To me vintage involves doing research. Chasing after an item, gathering money for a big ticket item and the ultimate joy of receiving your item when the chase is done and that it brings long lost memories of your childhood. But what the hell in ten years from now POTF 2 will be considered real vintage too so it annoys me but you gotta live with it i guess.
cheers! |

| o.k. this is something that comes up alot the biggest problem right off the bat is the word "vintage" it's the wrong word to use due to the fact anything after a few years old can be refered to as vintage so caling a potf2 fig vintage is in no way wrong because it is. when refering to older star wars figures for example collectables would be better it refers to items 30 years and older while some perfer Antiques this would also be wrong aside from cars and antique would be 100 years and older, Unfortunitly unless ebay came up with a set word to be used to discribe an item from a certian era then it is up to the buyer to ensure they read the discription I will admit it is annoying but there are ways to narrow the search area. |

I dont know where to start....collectors always tried to make their stuff special and make money out of it! The word antique means exactly that: antique! I no way is a furniture that is 100 or 200 years old antique! It pisses me off to read that everywhere and all the time! I personally do handle real antique stuff (Im a restorer) so ....dont know what to say....antique is a minimum of 1500 years old...there is no way around. There is always correct terms for old furnitures/tin toys etc, so if you just call them "antique" only shows that you have no clue! (no personal offend...just to the sellers that use that term) I also dont agree that the term vintage can be used for sth that has reached a certain age! That might work with wine and so on, but with toys it also means some kind of originality. The only ever existing vintage figures are those that appeared with the vinatge films! POTF2 will never be vinatge even if they are 500 years old!! For those who think different: Have fun with you "vintage SW films from 1990s" ...LOL.....you wouldnt call the SE vintage...would you?? |

From whom?? Collectors, traders, ebayers, etc??? You will never hear that from a art-historian. And you will never read in a museum: "antique cupboard" if iits gregorian or wilhelminian etc Its the same calling POTF2 vinatge! Why call sth antique that simply isnt antique?? And how to call real antique stuff?? doubleantique? realantique? antiqueantique?? vintage antique??...LOL EDIT: You are indeed right...it is used to use that term for 100+....and its written down etc etc....but to me it doenst fit....its "modern language (or is it antique already??)"...its invented by greedy sellers. BTW: I find it funny to see that you have the same word for "Antiquität" = an antique/antiques. In german at least the noun is different and shows that its a modern word that has nothing to do with the antiquity/ancient world...whatever is the right term for that! Anyway...we are drifting apart....back to VINTAGE |

| the only area where it it accually used with reference to being 100 years old or older is with the US customs office or when dealing with autos concidering you won't find any cars that would be 2 hundred years old or older there has to be a clear deffinition if you ask one dealer what time frame would be concidered an antique verses another they could differer by a fair number of years just like calling something vintage or a collectable. And in accuality the only time vintage really applies is when talking about wine not cars, outfits, furniture, toys or anything else it was a word that originated for dealing with wine. |
