It's not a variant, but it sure looks cool!
As to the original question, not really sure, but I've heard a few references to TAIWAN coo's being from some of the earliest versions. Only R2, Luke, Leia, Chewbacca, Vader & Boba have Taiwan COO's from the Star Wars set, four of which of course where in the early bird set. Wether or not early bird R2's had Taiwan COO's exclusively I would have no idea, never had the opportunity to look at one. Yeah, you can find Taiwan Artoos on some 12backs (Graham - Black_Falcon has one) so certainly an early variant. I don't think there are any Taiwan baggied R2's though? & I've never really kept a record of where the light & dark blue HK R2 figures can be found, both seem to appear on/in lots of different cards/baggies... | Dont want to hijack this tread but THE Taiwan r2 gets mentiond à couple of times as à possible EB r2. Is this possible because im trying to make an EB set but i cant quite spot à darker blue r2 but i own à Taiwan one. |

| I think Early Bird Sets only came with "Made In Hong Kong" baggies with the exception of Chewbacca who can be found in a no text baggie* so that would mean no Taiwan R2's in such sets?
Rog.
* To confuse things though, I've heard rumours of a Taiwan Leia in a no text baggie coming with the EB set. |

| Thanks Rog and thanks DLT9.
Know I know that R2-D2 Taiwan was on the Kenner card.
I don't have a earlybird set yet so I don't know about Hong Kong or Taiwan.

| I have given up on R2 since I have bought many that have looked really good on picture and described as perfect but when arrived they look yeah like the ones on this picture. Unfortunately I do no longer have an r2d2 with round shape, and had to compare with one of my popups. I also got this super ultra rare dagobah palitoy release. Which was made to match the battle damaged x-wing in esb. Just kidding just a custom. |
