Guys, what do you think. I'm thinking of asking someone for a payment plan for something, but I think the price he's asking is a bit too high. Can I still negotiate the price after I've asked him if a payment plan is possible? Or is that bad form? What about the other way around, first negotiating and then asking for a payment plan?

Yeah, that would make sense, & pric will probably go in your favour that way. I don't think that's poor form in a sale. The seller can always say no.

Hi Emiel,

Most if not all my major buys have been the Payment Plan way. Most big sellers will be more than happy to assist you in this way as in most cases this is the only way they can shift the higher item values in their inventory.

Personally I don't haggle on the price if they are willing to help me spread the payments. But there's no reson why you shouldn't ask - especially if you think the price is way too much. My advice though would be to agree the price first then move to issue of how to pay after.

The worst that could happen is the seller says no on the payment plan or no on the price (or no on both). But if you can save a few $$$ then it well worth asking.

Personally I have never had a seller ask for more because I want to spread payments but if this turns out to be the case then
finding out the price first has the benefit of you knowing how much extra your paying for the payment plan. You can then see if the plan is viable. For example if something is $1000 as a one-off payment in full but $1200 on a four-month plan then your effectively paying $200 in interest and maybe a credit card would be better as the discount from the seller would cover the interest on the purchase on most credit cards.

Good luck mate.

Craigy

It is quite dependent on the person you are buying from and their need to sell, I have had people that won't budge on their price yet offer relaxed payment plans and I have had people that have come down on their price to get a one payment deal- Both are helpful to me but I haven't had anyone come down on price and accept a payment plan.

The combination would be great but as I said not happened to me yet, I recently spoke to a seller about this same thing Emi, I thought his price was off yet even at a few hundred lower I was still thinking payment plan, he offered a payment plan but wouldn't lower his price - yet no harm in asking - I would always lay your cards on the table first and see what happens.

Thanks for the insightful comments guys. I must think about what I will do. I may take the gamble that he will lower the price a bit (I've checked his previous FS posts and he does seem to do that). Risk is of course that I'll lose it.
