just wondered why the kenner bubbles seem to yellow yet the palitoy ones dont?

not sure if its just the ones ive seen but every palitoy seems to have a perfect clear bubble

Some of My luke Jedi 65 back Palitoy cards appear to have been made and packaged in the same Hong Kong factory as the 77 back Kenner Luke Jedi equivalents. In this case both Palitoy and Kenner cards suffer from yellowing and have identical bubbles, trays, and waffeling around the seal.

I also have Palitoy luke Jedi MOC that are totally resilient to any yellowing. These bubbles though are totally different and look to have been sealed at the actual Palitoy factory as the sealing is different. In all the specimens I have there's no inner tray to support Luke and There's no waffling around the edges.


It seems Palitoy used whatever bubbles they had at the time as you can find Luke Jedi on Palitoy cards with the oversized Tri-logos, short-narrow & short-wide round edge bubbles, and stemed bubbles

Shawn or Joe had a link somewhere of the palitoy factory sealing their own Zuckuss figures. The plastic used for Palitoy seems Resilient to yellowing but they more flimsy and less robust than the "Kenner" ones which were carded in actual COO

The above is only based on my research on Luke Jedi but hopefully it helps?

Here is what you need to know on yellow bubbles Andy -

SW Kenner 99% Clear 1% Yellowed
SW Palitoy 99% Clear 1% Yellowed

ESB Kenner 70% Clear 30% Yellowed
ESB Palitoy 85% Clear 15% Yellowed

ROTJ Kenner 10% Clear 90% Yellowed
ROTJ Palioty 70% Clear 30% Yellow

Kenner POTF 1% Clear 99% Yellowed
Palitoy Tri Logo 99% Clear 1% Yellowed

There was definitely a change in the plastics that started on the ESB wave.

By the time ROTJ MOC's were released by kenner in the US this new plastic (that we now know is prone to yellowing) was mainly used.

As Craig highlighted Palitoy used a wide mixture of bubbles for the ROTJ line. The actual European produced bubbles made at Palitoy and later the Tri Logo bubbles must have used the earlier type of plastic that stays clear.

Ive spent a lot of years studying MOC and hunting clear bubble examples and i stand by the percentages listed above.

I have four (and a fifth on the way) Palitoy MOC's and NONE of them have yellow bubbles! They are all from the ROTJ line too.

The only thing I've been able to notice with the Palitoy bubbles, is that they are EXTREMELY fragile. That and the double stem's don't seem to have the greatest of seals on them, which is a real shame as they are just plain cool.

I'm guessing it has everything to do with the plastic. Which is interesting, because most foreign MOC's don't display the same yellowing that Kenner does (as Jay pointed out above). Unless of course it's a 12bk. Those hardly every seem to yellow.

cheers for the posts and info guys , judging by the percentages what Jay has said it looks like maybe they used better quality plastic at the beggining ( hence less yellowing ), then thought where onto a winner here lets use cheaper stuff to raise profits on the later lines?

i dont have any palitoy moc yet, but if there are any going really cheap i can examine carefully just how fragile the plastic may be

thats little clip that was posted of the toy factory was great to see, il bet the people working there had no idea that in thirty years the stuff they packed would be worth and sought after so highly, i wonder if they thought they would get wrong for putting wrong figures in different cards so said nothing and thats how they leaked out

Did Palitoy have a long-term contact to release the figures from all 3 movies? Or did they have to agree new contracts for each film release?

Sounds as though Kenner were probably trying to squeeze more profit out of the figures as they went on, but my thinking is that Palitoy had to agree deals to release each line - and so they werent as able to squeeze that profit?

Andy if only that were true my friend.

Some interseting facts from Jay regarding the % of bubbles that are yellow.

I've no yellow bubbles on my 12/20 backs,and a fair few on my ESB cards. 5 from 30 Palitoy ESB MOC's have yellowed in my collection so 1 in 6 say which makes Jay's 85% clear figure pretty close

It right pisses you off when you come across a figure you want to add to your collection and the bubble has yellowed.

Maybe the additives in the plastic bubbles were changed around the ESB era or maybe in ramping up production, they started using a cheaper plastic. It is too bad that there really isn't a way to tell what card a stormtrooper came off from. It would be interesting if to see if more from a certain release are white, while the majority of the others are yellow.
