Well i have always been a fan of Original Scores and the impact and way they can set the tone for the film (we all know what John Williams brought to the SW Saga!)

Anyways i was looking for a film to download / watch the other night when i was bad with my chest infection and i ended up watching Gattaca which i havent seen in over 10 yrs + For one i think its a great film but its also got a great original score below is the main theme from the end of the movie.

Film and Television music is my first love beginning with the Doctor Dolittle soundtrack LP back in the early 70's and solidified with Star Trek re-runs and Star Wars in 1977. It was always hard to answer the question "what kind of music do you listen to?" when I was in school because most people aren't even aware that there is music in TV and movies and my attempts to answer the question usually left people confused or looking at me like I was from a Galaxy far, far, away.

The love of orchestral movies scores naturally led to my love of classical music and to my first career as a radio announcer at a Classical music station (and a simultaneous job at a record store which only fueled my collection as a record/CD junkie). In my final year at the station I fulfilled a long standing ambition and wrote/produced/hosted a 13 part series of hour-long shows called "Lights, Camera, Music!".

So, yeah, perverse interest is probably a good way to describe my love of film scores (or "Obsession" to use the title of one of my favorite Bernard Herrmann scores). Gattaca was a really good movie all around and I like Michael Nyman's score. Danny Elfman is probably my favorite "younger" composer as he has one of the most distinct compositional "voices" in Hollywood (repetitive as it may be from time to time--but that is the nature of the business).

I'm a big one for "Golden Age" composers like Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Miklos Rozsa, Alfred Newman, Max Steiner and, my favorite, Bernard Herrmann. Jerry Goldsmith, Ennio Morricone and John Williams top the next list of course. Finding good film music that I like these days is a pretty rare occurrence. Howard Shore's scores for The Lord of the Rings movies are the only thing I can think of from the last 10-15 years that have had anywhere near the impact on me as the Star Wars scores have had (Shore's music for "Ed Wood" is terrific too).

Great thread Jay, I am addicted to Original Movie Scores, they can make or break a movie.

Nice thread and two good choices there Jay - Nyman's Gattaca is haunting and Elfman always works so magically well with Tim Burton.
I like stuff by Ry Cooder, Morricone, and John Barry and of course Williams. Also Angelo Badalimenti who did some of the David Lynch soundtracks.
I'm also a fan of 70s and 80s TV themes too.
There are so many great soundtracks to choose from it was hard just picking a couple - but here you go: Some modern and some classic...

I've always loved the opening sequence for "Forbidden Planet". I couldn't find a video with the original titles but the music is awesome.

I have always loved movie music. I can remember when i was a kid an saw ANH for the first time the scene where Luke looks out over the desert and the music just weeps his dispair about beeing stuck there . The music still gets me , when all the violins kick in :-)

I work as a Stage manager / tekkie in Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. We have a big concert hall and our own symphony orchestra.

Some years ago i was up in the follow spots rooms in under the roof of the concert hall .Cleaning up while the orchestra where having a rehearsal on stage .

Then they startet to play the main theme from ANH . I just sat there in the window with goosebumps .
This huge orchestra where playing just for me :-) :-) :-)

That was a huge one :-)

On the pop side of things .The Moulin Rouge movie is great . The way the used all this music from every one from Sting , Kiss ,Eloton John, queen etc and set them 100 years back and mixed em with classic and other things like Tango etc


It's just a great movie , sound track and even your girl will love the both. So go and pick it up guys

this is one of my favs and it has a cool main musical theme which really adds a lot to the feel, tention and atmosphere of the film...

Great Thread Jay! I thought i was the only one who liked movie themes! Just a couple off the top of my head. Im not looking at songs that made the charts.
